New GI Todd Hollenshead Interview

by Wester | Permalink

As QuakeCon 2005 continues to ensue, Game Informer had gotten the chance to have a few words with Todd Hollenshead about the DOOM movie, etc. Here's a rather large portion from it:
"GI: Going back to Doom, what’s it been like working on the Doom movie project?

TH: Well lately it’s been great, but before that it was sort of hit and miss. I started at id in 1996. About a year before that a deal was signed originally to do the movie. The focus of the company had changed to Quake, and then it was Quake 2, Quake 3. The movie was floating around in purgatory for a while and we couldn’t really get a good script at all. I don’t think there was a lot of motivation with the people who had the ability to actually get the project together.

Then when we came to E3 2002, I think we absolutely hit a home run with the presentation that we did for Doom 3, Hollywood took notice, and it was like Doom was back. At that time we had linked up with CAA as an agent who had real influence within Hollywood and had the contacts to get us in with the right people, and also had some interesting ideas about how to filter who was really interested in making a movie which was going to be a cool movie that was something that wouldn’t be an embarrassment to us, which is a big risk with movies based on videogames.

Also partnering with John Wells which is the last thing he needs to do is release a bad movie. He’s done West Wing and E.R. and probably moves money around like I move dirt. They don’t just want to make a great movie but they want to make a movie that’s true to what Doom meant to fans. They felt the key piece of making that is getting us involved. We had certain contractual rights, like we had meaningful consultation and those sorts of things. But on paper that’s not worth a s*** if people on the project don’t want the input. But they actually wanted our input.

I went through 30 different scripts. The effects people worked closely with our art department. We sent them a lot of content from the game so they could get the characters and the demons and the sets right. I was over at the set in Prague a couple of times and I knew they nailed it before I met anyone, because I went to a set where they weren’t filming and they let me horse around and check out what they’d done and it was literally like stepping out of Prague and stepping into Doom 3. And I was like, “Oh my gosh, this is so cool!”

I can’t say that I’m a super hardcore fan of The Rock like some of his fans are, but obviously I knew who the guy was and I liked his work in movies. I’m not a huge professional wrestling fan but if you’re not a fan you know who The Rock is, but he’s Dwayne Johnson to me. He’s super enthusiastic and he’s a super nice guy.

Carl Urban is a great actor and a star in a different capacity. Carl is more of a low key guy. Both of those guys have been super cool with us, and interested, and asking, “When you’re making a game what do you think about this?” It kind of drove the point home with me when I got to the set for the first time and saw that they were making our movie. You didn’t want to touch anything for fear that you’d wake up from the dream, almost. I was like, “Hey, can I take a picture?” and the guy said, “Man this is your movie, you can do whatever you want to! We’re all out here because you guys made this videogame” (laughs)"

Make sure to give the whole interview a read as it's a very good one.

by Wester | Permalink

Confirmed by Activision themselves, that is! Here, take a look at the press release announcement for yourself:
ID SOFTWARE AND ACTIVISION CELEBRATE

10TH ANNUAL QUAKECON WITH QUAKE 4 MULTIPLAYER UNVEILING

DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil for Xbox Also Debuts at QuakeCon 2005

Santa Monica, CA – August 9, 2005 – 3…2…1…FIGHT! id Software™ and Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) give multiplayer gaming a shot of adrenaline with the announcement that QUAKE 4™ multiplayer will be unveiled at the 10th Annual QuakeCon – the nation’s largest and most legendary video game festival and tournament. In addition, QuakeCon 2005 will also play host to the first showing of DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil™ for the Xbox® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. QuakeCon 2005 will attract more than 6,000 video game fans from around the world and is being held at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas from August 11-14.

QUAKE 4 marks the return of id’s trademark deathmatch-style multiplayer formula. Online gameplay action in QUAKE 4 is based on the speed, style and overall multiplayer feel found in the popular QUAKE III Arena®, and allows gamers to play in Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Arena, CTF and Tournament modes on the Strogg or Marine teams. QUAKE 4 is being developed by Raven Software in cooperation with id Software. For more information on QUAKE 4, please visit the official website at www.QUAKE4GAME.com.

Giving fans a sneak-peek at some of the most anticipated upcoming titles has become a tradition, and this year is no different. For the first time ever, QuakeCon attendees will be able to get their hands on DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil for Xbox. Co-developed by Nerve Software and id Software, DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil is a stand-alone extension of the DOOM 3® saga and delivers more terror and fast-paced action in mankind’s battle to overcome Hell. The game features a fresh storyline with all-new levels, beasts and powerful weapons, including the gravity-defying “Grabber,” the time-manipulating “Artifact,” and the return of the double barreled Shotgun.

Both games are rated “M” for Mature by the ESRB.

About QuakeCon:
Often described as the “Woodstock of Gaming,” QuakeCon was created in August of 1996 by a group of friends on the IRC network’s EFnet who had a desire to meet in person. Less than 100 attendees gathered at the Best Western in Garland, Texas that first year to play and talk games and compete in the first QuakeCon tournament. id Software’s lead programmer John Carmack and several other id Software team members stopped by to chat with fans about DOOM®, QUAKE®, and the future of an up-and-coming id Software.

Now in its 10th year, QuakeCon remains true to its original mission as an event created by gamers, for gamers. Sponsored by id Software and other industry-leading software and hardware manufacturers, QuakeCon continues to be run by a dedicated group of 30 year-round volunteers and more than 200 on-site volunteers. Nearly 6,000 people attended QuakeCon in 2004, and the event has expanded to include QUAKE®, QUAKE II®, QUAKE III Arena®, QUAKE III: Team Arena®, Return to Castle Wolfenstein® and DOOM 3®. For more information on QuakeCon visit the Web site at www.quakecon.org.

New AICN Karl Urban interview

by Wester | Permalink

AICN have posted up their interview with Karl Urban, one of the staring cast members of the DOOM movie, regarding, of course, the DOOM movie itself. Here's an excerpt from it:
"QUINT: Because on the panel it seemed like they were hinting at the creatures having a more biological origin than spilling out of a portal from hell...

KARL URBAN: Yeah... I think that's probably more the case. Hell is there in a multitude of forms. Maybe not as literal as some people would like, but is basically represented in a kind of multi-faceted way. There's references to where these creatures come from... I mean, my character makes a reference in the film about the origin of the creatures. You know, it's really up to... well, it's down to your personal belief system and what you believe hell is. There are so many different interpretations of that concept.
I think I can safely say that I believe we are faithful to a multitude of concepts of Hell."

Gamecloud DOOM movie coverage report from ComicCon

by Wester | Permalink

Thanks, Ransom Arceihn, for bringing to my attention at the forums that Gamecloud have their ComicCon report up which includes coverage of the DOOM movie panel report, confirming that the movie will take place on Mars, and it'll have the original demons from the DOOM games.

They also noted that a lot of the monsters won't be create using CGI models, but ratherly the old methods used in movies such as Alien(s), Predator, and the Terminator series, created by Stan Winston Studios.

Gamecloud also had got the chance to view a special 90-minute teaser trailer of the actual DOOM movie, which afterwards they gave a round of applause for. At least it sounds like there's some hope for the DOOM movie.

Check out the whole article for the rest of the goodies.
