Yet another new DOOM movie poster and...

by Wester | Permalink

A new, international DOOM movie poster has popped up over at PlanetDOOM.

Hopefully this flick doesn't culminate into being another Alone in the Dark.

Oh and in id Software's latest news post, they've announced that the DOOM RPG for the JAMDAT Mobile and mobile cell phone carrier will be available very soon now, and that the *official* release date has been set for the Xbox version port of the DOOM 3 RoE expansion pack - October 15th, 2005.

Cool stuff indeed. smile

TeamXbox's D3 RoE port preview and Adrian Carmack fired!?

by Wester | Permalink

Firstly, TeamXbox have snared up their preview of the DOOM 3 RoE Xbox version port.
"We had a chance to play a bit of the multiplayer action in DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil via the System Link option. You’ll have the same match type options as in the original DOOM 3 game: Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Last Man Standing, and Tournament. DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil looks good and runs quite smoothly in multiplayer, but the format is still the same which may turn gamers off. It’s still only a maximum of four players per match, and the combat isn’t all that interesting. There are a few dark places that you can hide and surprise an adversary, but we were hoping for something a bit more innovative here. We will have to admit that the smallish outdoor map was quite challenging, and contained the same elevation changes as the Campaign mode. If you got into the multiplayer action in DOOM 3 then you’ll definitely like the combat in DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil; much of the same with new weapons and levels."

And apparently due to Activision attempting to gain licenses of the DOOM, Quake, and Wolfenstein franchise properties, which would ultimately lead to them purchasing the whole company, Adrian Carmack (artist and co-founder of id Software) refused this mull by Activision to happen, causing him to be fired by id Software which IGN are reporting.
"According to a report in The Wall Street Journal [subscription only], last year Activision tried to buy the rights to id Software's Quake, DOOM, and Wolfenstein properties, and considered acquiring the legendary developer outright. Activision reportedly offered $90 million for the game rights, and considered a $105 million offer for the entire company.

Further, the Journal report suggests id Software fired artist and co-founder Adrian Carmack (no relation to id legend John Carmack) when he refused to be bought out for $20 million.

The article cites a suit filed by Adrian Carmack seeking to invalidate his employment contract with the developer. It appears that id refused Activision's offer hoping to force Carmack to sell his shares for $11 million, instead of the $40 million he would have received from Activision. Adrian Carmack held a 41% stake in id Software.

IGN was unable to obtain comment or confirmation from either Activision or id as of this writing."

Not the least bit good of optimistic news, to say the least.

Tons of new DOOM stuff

by Wester | Permalink

Firstly, IGN have up their review of the DOOM RPG for the mobile cell phone, rating it a superb 9.0/10.0 score, here's a slice from that:
"DOOM RPG, although based on a 12-year-old game, feels incredibly new. There is no other game on handsets quite like it (although, I really do suspect that will change in the next six to eight months). We're all familiar with the DOOM realm, especially after the successful third chapter on PC and Xbox, but this is just such a slick way to present such hallowed ground without seeming like a cash-in or retread. Many of the monsters in DOOM RPG are taken directly from the classic PC game, as are the sound effects and opening music. Even the little Marine's face in the HUD, which changes from indifference to grimace to devilish smirk, is a kick-in-the-pants reminder of purer gaming days"

And the DOOM 3 SP Mac OS X demo has finally been released, weighing 463.5 MB and available for download at Fileplanet.

And also, Gamecloud are reporting thatin Gameinformer's latest issue, they had a few words with John Carmack, lead programmer of id Software regarding the DOOM RPG mobile cell phone game, the upcoming DOOM movie, a possible sequel to DOOM (DOOM 4, anybody? wink), and a "Super DOOM 3" version port for the PS3 which would be nothing more than a graphical engine re-make of the already spiffy DOOM 3 engine which has a lastability elapsing of ~5 years (estimated) that's even powering Quake IV for the Xbox 360 - examplified as a perfect next-generation video gaming console as things already are at the moment...

Special forums event upcoming

by Paul | Permalink

We're having a special get-together on the forums tomorrow, that's Saturday the 27th at 21:00 till 00:00, get your local times here.

It's been quite a while since our last peak back in December, so I'm hoping we can break the current record of 48 people online at once. So this is partly a bit if fun, partly to find out what the server can take, and partly a 3rd birthday celebration (the forums were 3 years old a couple of weeks ago).

Got some crazy topic ideas:

Some political stuff, that's always good.
Xbox 360 launch title stuff.
PC vs Xbox 360 vs PS3.
Is gaming going stale?
What would be your perfect game.
The best way to destroy EA.
Gabe Newguy (the fat HL2 guy) vs John Carmack, who would win and why.
Of course you can talk about whatever you want, this is just some ideas I randomly came up with to make my post look more important. Hope to see you online tomorrow!

New Gamedaily DOOM 3 RoE Xbox port impressions

by Wester | Permalink

Gamedaily have fired up their impressions of the DOOM 3: RoE expansion pack's Xbox port. Here's a snippet from it:
"As for the single-player component it looks and plays exactly like Doom 3 Xbox. With that being said, this expansion (which doesn't require the original in order to play it) is really more of the same. I'm all for it because I thoroughly enjoyed Doom 3, but if you're looking for a new taste sensation you won't find it here. Also, I noticed that the cut scenes were a bit choppy, but since the game's unofficial release date is October 18, Nerve still has plenty of time to get things running smoothly."

There's nothing really new otherwise in the impressions article, but I still suppose it's worth a read.
