DOOM 3 Xbox preview and DOOM 3 Xbox / RoE expansion date

by Wester | Permalink

Firstly Gigex.com have their own little preview up of the Xbox version of DOOM 3, also covering the details on the extra $10 costing collectors edition to include The Ultimate DOOM and DOOM II. Here's a slice from that:
"First up, the environments are dank, dimly lit, and sometimes hard to get through without flicking on a flashlight to get you ahead. It is, after all, an abandoned station that has somehow run amuck with a number of unspeakables just eager to put you on their dinner plate. Armed with only a couple of weapons at first and then able to expand with new ones that you pick up as you travel down each hellish new division of the base, you find yourself in a battle of wills with everything from death-defying beasts of unspeakable nature to the simplest, yet goriest, of zombies, who come crawling out of the woodwork when least expected. Vicarious has done well on the details, especially the lighting and animation. It skips a beat once in a while, but the final touch-ups have yet to be made, so the finished product will simply look stunning."

Secondly, id Software and Activision have officially set the release date for both the DOOM 3 Expansion Pack - Ressurection of Evil - and the DOOM 3 Xbox Version; April 4th, 2005. Here's the press release:
"SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 9 -- Make a date with death. id Software(TM) and Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI - News) today confirmed the week of April 4 as the worldwide release of never-ending evil, with the arrivals of both DOOM 3(TM) for the Xbox(R) video game system from Microsoft and DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil(TM), the official PC expansion pack to what critics and gamers have raved is one of the scariest games ever created: DOOM 3(TM)."

New DOOM3 Engine VS Source Engine article

by Wester | Permalink

Over at devmaster.net, they have a nice, long, and in-depth article up comparing id Software's DOOM3 engine and VALVe Software's Source Engine in terms of lighting, shadowing, A.I, textures, models, networking, animation, audio, physics, system requirements, and portability, without throwing in and plastering all the technical terminology that only tech geeks truly understand. Here's a snoop:
"The main stereotype that the Doom 3 Engine suffers from, is that it can only render small, cramped inside corridors. This in fact is completely untrue, because the engine is quite capable of rendering big, detailed outside worlds. You will see the outside capabilities of the engine in Quake 4 and it will dramatically change people's perception on what the Doom 3 Engine can do. The Doom 3 engine is more suitable for inside environments though, because of its BSP (Binary Space Partitioning) system for optimizing the graphics engine. The Doom 3 Engine also supports larger textures, which in the future will allow the textures to look even better. The Source Engine is pretty much the opposite. It is more suited for outdoor environments and its inside environments don't look nearly as lifelike or detailed as Doom 3's. Both of these things are debatable and it is pretty much a toss-up for this category"

It's a great read, so check out the entire article!

New D3: ROE Tim Willits Interview

by Wester | Permalink

CVG had an interview with Tim Willits of id Software regarding the upcoming DOOM 3 expansion pack, Ressurection of Evil, here's a quick snippet:
"The first section of Doom 3 was quite slow and deliberate in the way it built up the tension. Will the pacing in Resurrection of Evil be equally creepy, or are you going for a more action-oriented experience?

Tim Willits: It's shorter, it's about half as long as Doom 3. I think it's a lot more intense. There's more of a focus on action and when you add in the powers you acquire from the Hunters and the extra possibilities of the Gravity Gun, we're definitely talking about a much more action-packed experience. That's not to say there won't be quieter, more moody moments too, but we really wanted to try and make it as much fun as we possibly could."

Gamespy's DOOM 3 Xbox Preview

by Wester | Permalink

Gamespy have their preview up of the DOOM 3 Xbox Version. Here's a quick slice:
"The powers-that-be are extremely insistent that DOOM 3 on Xbox is not a port. Their aversion to this moniker isn't for the obvious reason. In fact, it's because the game features more modes along with tweaks to existing elements of the PC game. Strange but true, loyal reader. For one, the Xbox version will feature co-op via Xbox Live. That's a feature even the beloved Halo 2 omitted from its finished product. Because of the differences two human players cause to the story elements and cutscenes, new dialogue was recorded and missions were altered to make more sense. Compare this to many other co-op games, where NPCs say the same thing whether they're supposed to be talking to one or two heroes."

As the article is a good read don't forget to read the full preview.

Yahoo! Game Domain's DOOM 3: ROE preview

by Wester | Permalink

I saw this over at PlanetDOOM.

Yahoo! Games Domain have tied together a preview for the upcoming DOOM 3 expansion pack, Resurrection of Evil. A small snip:
"Hooper started with the plot. "All hell's broken loose again," as he put it. Two years after Doom 3's ending, Earth is receiving a strange signal from Site 1 on Mars, one of the UAC sites you don't visit in the first game. Dr. Elizabeth McNeil, who you might remember as Dr. Betruger's right-hand woman, is sent to investigate, and you're a Marine combat engineer sent along as escort."
