Timothee Interview

by Wester | Permalink

Linux Games had an interview with Timothee Besset of id Software regarding things like Timothee's history, what he thinks of certain engines how he likes Linux and etc.
"Now with regards to game development on Linux, where do you see its strengths and weaknesses, areas it needs to improve on, areas where it could be more useful that people tend to overlook?

Development environments are still an issue; I took the extra time to learn Emacs lately, and I think I'm really happy with it now, so I'm probably going to stick to that. I tried a lot of IDE's out there, and I've always been disappointed; for instance, Eclipse. I've seen IBM throw lots of money at Eclipse, but it's still Java and really slow, and it's probably very good to do Java work, but to do C++ I was really not convinced at all. There's the GNOME Development Environment, but it's completely oriented to people writing GNOME applications; they think about their own window environment instead of thinking general application development. Emacs is a bit more, "we don't care what you do or even if you're doing daemon and console applications, we just provide a good environment." It's really a great tool - you understand afterwards why it's so successful, why so many people talk about it, once you get the time to learn it. It's a really cool editor."

DOOM 3 tech vs Half-Life 2 tech article

by Wester | Permalink

WhUtDuFuK.com have up an comparison article comparing DOOM 3's and Half-Life 2's tech, I must say some of their decisions leave me quite in terrible awe. (IE, Half-Life 2 having better physics than DOOM 3. IT doesn't, but Half-Life 2 shows it off more via its maps). Especially for our resident techie geeks, this read is a good one and is the beginning of the true DOOM 3 VS Half-Life 2 war.

Doom 3 playlist

by Kylratix | Permalink

Everyone can agree that Doom 3 lacks a musical playlist. So, if you were to add a few songs to the game, what would be on the top of your chart?

Feel free to post your ideas on the associated forum thread.

Dynamic mapping through scripting

by Kylratix | Permalink

Doom3Files recently featured the innovative Plasma Gun Radar mod. This cool modification takes gamers back to the movie Alien, with a radar screen that replaces the original Plasma Gun's gui that shows nearby enemies.

What might be MWoody's most impressive mod though, is his proof of concept called MazeMaker, which "randomly generates a 'perfect' maze" dynamically while inside the game. Perhaps MWoody's concept might be on the verge of something larger? Maybe a mod that creates randomized multiplayer maps where nothing is the same twice would support Doom's old theme of fear of the unknown in the internet arena.

DOOM 3 Board Game Interview

by Wester | Permalink

Gamespy sat down with Kevin Wilson at GenCon for a good go about the DOOM board game. Here's a sample:
"GameSpy: So how does DOOM: The Boardgame play? How many players?

Kevin Wilson: We have up to four players and one of them plays The Invader. He controls the monsters. The other players play marines and they have to work together to defeat the monsters and exit through the red door. The scenarios have descriptions and item locations, and places to put monsters. The Invader gets to play cards that summon monsters and he controls them as they attack the player. If he kills a player, he gets a frag. Also the scenarios are timed, if he gets through the deck and the players haven't one, he gets a frag."

Make sure to give the full interview a read for the rest of the unveiled details.

Doom 3 Fortress well underway

by Kylratix | Permalink

Barely a month has passed since Id smashed down store doors with another ground-breaking game and already many major modding groups are rabidly developing, even without the source-code release of D3's game dll. Among the aspiring groups is a project that is as hallowed to Id's First-Person Shooters as Capture The Flag - Team Fortress.

Project leader of the Doom 3 variant of the classic TF mod, photeknix, has had his team laboring away at the graphics and maps for D3F since the game went gold. Just four weeks after forming, the D3F project has now fully completed two maps: Hardcore and another that photeknix is keeping the public in the dark about for the moment. Accordingly, another five are currently being worked on simultaneously, while altogether 12 are planned for the first release.

With any TF mod comes a developer¿s twist that can either make or break it. Team D3F plans on staying mostly true to the classic form of game-play though, ¿There will be a few tweaks of our own for the new engine, but besides that it will play like Quake Team Fortress.¿ And certainly, anyone who has played Doom 3 may agree that tweaks on the engine will certainly be needed to play at the same pace as D3F¿s predecessors. As photeknix noted, ¿Doom3 is a laggy mofo, and really takes a beefy system to run, but it sure will make it pretty.¿

So, will D3F be on the top or a flop? As one critic in #doom3 of EfNET noted, "Anyone can write their name on the ground. That doesn¿t really mean that it belongs to them." And of course, the Team Fortress community has been known to be fickle in past games, as photeknix noted. However, visit D3F's website and view images of their maps in progress and model renders of Gas Grenades, eye candy pleasing to even the most demanding TF addicts, and skepticism subsides. "Many of us come from various fields and some other mods," assured photeknix, ¿we all have at least 5 years experience in what we are producing.¿ Predict as we may, only a few good hours of TF violence will spell D3F¿s fortune. And like many D3 gamers, I¿ll be waiting enthusiastically for that chance.

The people's Cyberdemon

by Kylratix | Permalink

"You don't have to use the soulcube to kill him; any weapon will do the trick."

Hal9000's new .def wrapper for the massive Cyberdemon allows modders to use the monster in a map as if it were just another demon on the street. It can be found at his site, What The Hal. It's good news for mappers ... but, perhaps not so good for map reviewers.

No Xbox DOOM 3 in 2004?

by Wester | Permalink

Gamespot have a news report up regarding Xbox DOOM 3's release date, and it seems as if the inferior version(except multiplayer wise) of DOOM 3 in contrast to the PC version has been pushed back to 2005 release date wise. sad
"It's probably not going to come out this year," Hollenshead told Reuters today. "Back in May, we were kind of hoping we'd have a holiday launch. I'm not sure we're going to get there." Previously, Hollenshead had not leaned one way or the other, offering only neutral statements such as, "It is still up in the air" or "We can't say, at this point, that it's going to come out this year."

Well that's one loss for Xbox only gamers.

UPDATE: Reuters.com themselves have up a full report on the matter as well. Make sure to check it out.

New Interview

by Wester | Permalink

IGN had a few words with Todd Hollenshead of id Software. Here's a slice from it:
"IGNPC: At the Game Developer Conference (GDC) keynote speech back in March, Carmack mentioned that, with each additional game you've worked on, it took longer and longer to develop, and the impression I got was that he was becoming more and more frustrated and that this new rendering technology he's working on for the next game might be his last.

Todd Hollenshead: Well, that would really be a question for John, but he hasn't said anything like that, to me, anyway. He's actually working on new stuff for the Doom 3 technology. Literally, as late as about six weeks before it went gold was when he added in some substantial new features, such as the heat shimmer effect and is already making changes to the engine for what we're going to work on next. I don't know if he's going to rewrite the renderer or not but, ultimately, I think that he's excited about he can do in the future with the renderers. Doom 3 did take a long time, but we certainly don't think that our next game is going to take four-plus years to develop. That's not the plan starting off.

There are a few reasons why it did take so long for Doom 3 to be done, one of which is that the media requirements for a game as big Doom 3 were just very large, and we needed to have a bigger team, and we did ultimately end up with a bigger team finishing the game than when we started on it. The second thing is that¿the term is over-used, but when John architected the rendering technology, it really was a different paradigm in 3D FPS rendering. Whenever you have something that's brand-new like that, there's a learning curve, and the learning curve in this case is compounded by the fact that we didn't have mature tool sets to work with starting off, and also compounded by the fact that it was so dramatically different from the way that we did stuff--even changes from Quake to Quake II to Quake III were obviously significant, but not nearly so significant as the change from Quake III to Doom 3. It was easily at least as big of a difference to go from, say, Doom II to Quake."

Make sure to head over to the full interview for the rest of the read.

FiringSquad benchmarks

by Wester | Permalink

FiringSquad have up DOOM 3 benchmark tests in a wide variety of multiple settings testing all kinds of RADEON cards with the Catalyst 4.9 beta drivers and all kind of GeForce cards with the ForceWare 61.77 drivers.
"While the performance with these cards isn¿t as high as the others, testing them is a little easier, as we feel that for most of these cards DOOM 3¿s medium quality mode provides the most ideal combination of visual quality to performance -- dropping down to DOOM 3¿s low quality mode yields a negligible performance increase for the most part."

DOOM 3 laptop performance

by Wester | Permalink

Legit Reviews have an article up regarding how to get your laptop to run DOOM 3 and some benchmark performance results. Here's a taster:
"The first choice we had to make was what video card driver to use on our notebook that contained discrete graphics via the ATI Mobility 9600 64mb chip. We couldn't make up our minds so we went ahead and used four different drivers to see which worked best. We went with the official ASUS V8.01 (this is officially the correct and latest driver for the ASUS M6N notebook). We then modded ATI CATALYST Drivers version 4.7, 4.8, and 4.9 Beta for use on our notebook.

If you are wondering how we installed CATALYST drivers on our notebook you will need to download a simple program called DH Mod tool V2.0b. Without the mod program when you try to install a CATALYST driver onto a notebook it will give you an error prompt saying INF not found. That's where the mod tool comes in. Simply run the mod tool and point it to the install files and it will modify them to install on your notebook. The above screen shot shows the video card properties with the original ASUS driver on the left and the just released ATI CATALYST 4.8 driver on the right after we installed them via the mod tool."

Make sure to head over to the whole article for the rest of the details and results etc.

Our review of DOOM 3

by Paul | Permalink

Yes it took a while - quite a long while, but we wanted to make sure we had the best review on the net. I hope you agree with us, and if not please check out our forums where you can flame away. Here's a quick slice:
"Nearly seven years and four games later came the announcement that id was working on Doom 3. Anticipation grew, naturally. Doom 3 could easily be called one of the most anticipated games of all time, or at least, recent times. As the senior editor of Game Informer, Matt Helgeson, said ever so adequately, ¿Doom 3 has slightly lower expectations around it than the Second Coming of Jesus." Couldn¿t have put it better myself, Mr. Helgeson, and I must say: I put things fairly well."

So please check out Back to the Bloody Martian Campaign for what we think of DOOM 3.

Expansion in the works

by Handshakes | Permalink

A short story over at Shacknews says that an expansion to Doom3 is in the works by a thirdparty developer.

The story also suggests that the highly anticipated Doom3 demo is just weeks away and that a retail patch will be released soon as well. It's also interesting to note that activision is saying that sales for the first week of Doom3 may be the highest ever recorded for a PC game.
